Hi. My name is Cindy and I’m a geek.
By trade I’m a programmer. My current job is all about rendering and enabling searches in non-ASCII languages in a cross-browser, cross-platform application. Besides Unicode and a plain-text encoding of our devising, we also support legacy fonts so as you can imagine there’s a lot of issues to cover in this job. Searches involve standard string-match trawling through our text files as well as faster lookup through whole words stored in our databases (preprocessed, to be sure). So all of this keeps me quite busy, but…
I like to play with the fun stuff, too
So expect to see forays into Perl, PHP, api’s into Flickr (my latest project) and other goodies. Of course, given that I’m setting this up in Wordpress for the first time, it’s a given that I’m poking into what I can do here, too.
As for me, I’ve been on the Internet since 1984. That’s right, I had a unix account with email over twenty years ago. (So when I yap on about programming through storming blizzards of snow way back when, I expect you to be quiet and listen up.) I remember Mosaic, the first web browser back in 1993 or so, and I used lynx for many years, just because bandwidth issues were ridiculous back then.
I was heavily involved in usenet for many years (I’m sure you can find the relevant posts if you do a search on me), took a break for a while and have been getting back into things again. Slowly, slowly over the years, I’ve been dragged, kicking and screaming, into the world of gui-interfaced applications. Even linux has a great desktop presentation now. I have to grudgingly admit that this is a Good Thing, but I still use my terminal console on my computer I want you to know!
This blog is a compendium of strictly geek- and technical- related matters as they catch my fancy. To talk with me about politics, dogs, or anything else at all requires kicking back with me in person with a nice cold glass of beer!
